Build-A-Garden

Grow Food Where You Live

Want to grow your own food—right in your yard? We believe that everyone who wants to grow their own food should have access to adequate, toxin-free growing space. To make this happen, we are launching the Build-a-Garden initiative with the goal of building 100 raised garden beds in 2020.

The Build-a-Garden initiative supports SOUTHWEST GEORGIA residents and organizations who want to grow their own food in raised-bed gardens. We provide you with:

  • A raised-bed garden filled with healthy, safe soil

  • Micro-irrigation system for watering

  • 12 free seedlings in March/April of your first year

  • Free gardening workshops and a Growing Guide

  • Ongoing support through drop-in open hours at
    our sustainable farms.

Eligibility & Gardener Expectation:

Residents of DOUGHERTY, LEE, & MITCHELL COUNTY are welcome to apply. Priority is given to those with financial need, families with children, veterans, first responders, and seniors. No prior gardening experience is required; enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are all you need! Gardeners are expect to:

  • Attend a 2-hour introduction to gardening workshop session and complete a post-season survey.

  • Plant and maintain your garden on a weekly basis. We generally recommend spending at least 1-2 hours per week.

  • While not required, our hope is that participants will become engaged with our programs and other gardeners in their neighborhood.

Cost:

To make the program accessible to all, Flint River Fresh has a pay-what-you-can policy, with a minimum contribution of $25 from individuals or families. Because we have limited funding, we ask that you contribute as much as possible toward the full cost of materials and labor, which is $250 per bed. We ask that organizations pay the full cost of each bed.

Apply now!

We accept applications year-round and schedule builds on a rolling basis. Contact us with any questions or concerns at: info@flintriverfresh.org or 229-942-9757.
