Flint River Fresh promotes access to fresh, healthy food by connecting local farmers with schools, worksites, and directly to consumers through our mobile farmers markets, farm-to-table produce box deliveries, . This direct connection between consumer and producer strengthens our local economy, provides environmental benefits, and helps promote the culture of food.
We envision a future where everyone in our community sources a significant portion of their food from local farmers, ranchers, and producer.
We are working to develop the following tools to help our farm partners:
- Cash on delivery and/or pick up of their products
- Marketing of individual farms
- Transportation from farm to our storage warehouse
- Access to local school systems and institutions
- Cooler storage space to assure quality control of produce
Mobile farmers Market
Our Mobile Farmers Market is a "farmer's market and produce aisle on wheels." Families are able to purchase fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables from local area farmers at an affordable price through us. We have a regular monthly schedule, reaching multiple neighborhoods each day and targeting communities that have limited access to their food choices.
We have partnered with the Albany Housing Authority to set up mobile markets in four of their communities on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. We visit communities that have a high population of seniors and people with disabilities.
Farm to School is a program that connects schools and local products, helps students learn about the path of food from farm to fork, and supports local farmers. It is a key element of our work with school children, which includes food and nutrition education for students.
We work with a network of local farmers and nutrition directors to incorporate locally grown, fresh fruits and vegetables into school cafeterias. This provides an additional sales outlet for local farmers and encourages consumption of fresh and nutritious foods among students.
We promote local foods by coordinating "Harvest of the Month", where feature 1 to 2 different local, seasonal fruit or vegetable each month. We create posters, signs, and other outreach materials to promote the locally grown foods in their school cafeterias. We coordinate veggie sampling days at schools, where students have the opportunity to try new or unfamiliar fruits and vegetables during lunchtime. Local Farmers also assist in the educational aspects of the project by sharing their farm stories and photos at "Meet the Farmer" visits.
